The Ackland Art Museum invites families to spend the day after Thanksgiving at the Museum! Community Day, on Friday, November 27, is a day-long exploration of art and ideas from around the world. Muralist Michael Brown will lead an art-making workshop, UNC-Chapel Hill art students will help screen-print your own t-shirts, gallery teachers and docents will lead guided tours, and several other programs and events offer something for the whole family. Events begin at 10:00AM and continue until 4:00PM. Admission is free. Detailed schedule below:
TOUR: Moving with Art

This tour explores how artists show movement in art and how we can respond to works of art by moving ourselves!
Recommended for 4-8 year olds and their families.
The Art (and Science) of Facial Prosthetics

Gallery 11(2nd floor)
Before he became an artist, the sculptor Seymour Lipton (whose piece Sentinel II is at the center of this season's exhibition The Guardian and the Avant-Garde) practiced as a dentist. In this talk, Dr. Glenn Minsley, Associate Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics at the UNC School of Dentistry, will discuss some of the art involved in his profession today by demonstrating and discussing the sculptural skills and techniques used in facial prosthetic reconstruction.
This presentation will include graphic images of actual facial reconstruction which may be disturbing. Recommended for older teens and adults.

Experience art in intriguing new ways as students from the Arts Academy at Chapel Hill High School present their responses to works in different galleries. A variety of performances will celebrate and perhaps question the art on display.

Sculptor Seymour Lipton had many friends and contemporaries who shared ideas with each other in the studio and daily life. See examples of artistic friends in The Guardian and the Avant-Garde and other spaces in the Museum.

MAKING ART TOGETHER: Heroes and Guardians

Hanes Art Center Painting Studio (2nd floor)
Work with well know artist and muralist Michael Brown to make a collaborative work that celebrates the special guardians and heroes from our past and in our daily lives. See how the work changes throughout the day!

HANDS-ON ART: Design Your Own T-Shirt
10:30 AM-1:00 PM | 2:00- 4:00 PM
Hanes Art Center, John Henry Print Studio (3rd floor)
Art students from UNC-Chapel Hill will guide you through the process of making your own silk-screened T-shirt. Select the design of your choice; available colors may vary during the day. FREE if you bring your own light-colored shirt or purchase one of those provided for $5.
Recommended for all ages. The John Henry Print studio contains equipment and materials that may be dangerous. Parents, please monitor your children while in this space.
Manhattan in Chapel Hill

Choose props and costumes to wear that suggest your favorite Ackland guardians and heroes, and get your photograph taken with friends and family members in a recreation of O. Louis Guglielmi's painting Manhattan Bridge (as seen in gallery 7 of The Guardian and the Avant-Garde: Seymour Lipton's Sentinel II in Context).

Scavenger Hunts

Pick up a scavenger hunt at the front desk or the Education Resource Center to find interesting characters and images throughout the Museum. There's a hunt for 8-12 year olds and a second one for teens and adults.
Detail Search

Pick up a ring that holds details of works in different galleries. Find the details in the original art pieces.
Recommended for children ages 3-8 years, with parental assistance.
Making Art to Music

Hanes Art Center, Room 222
Louis Stone, Stuart Davis, Hans Hofmann, and other twentieth century painters listened to music as they worked. What will you paint or draw if you're listening to jazz, Beethoven, or some funk? Let the music guide you . . .
