Student Friends of the Ackland

Student Friends is an organization that strives to promote learning, discovery, and engagement through art by planning and implementing interesting and exciting events at the Ackland Art Museum.

Student Friends of the Ackland will bring art to life for the student body by presenting a variety of programs that are thought-provoking, relevant, intellectually stimulating, and entertaining.

Previous Student Friends events:

  • Lyrical Artistry - Celebrating the launch of Student Friends, this performance by members of the campus group Hip Hop Nation encouraged attendees to consider the spoken word in the context of visual art.

  • Behind-the-Scenes at the Ackland - Student Friends toured the Ackland's storage areas with Museum Director Jerry Bolas, explored how an exhibition is designed and installed with Chief Preparator Joe Gargasz, and learned about art restoration and care of the collection from Conservator Lyn Koehnline.

  • Tone on Tone: A Celebration of Music at the Ackland - Throughout the museum, University ensembles performed music reflecting the time periods and cultures of the art around them. Performances included hymns from the Christian tradition, selected works by J. S. Bach for unaccompanied cello, a demonstration by members of the UNC Gamelan Ensemble, pop a cappella vocals by the Achordants, and an African drum circle with audience participation.

  • Apple Chill 2005 - Community members of all ages contributed to a Sidewalk Chalk "Quilt" organized by the Student Friends during Chapel Hill's annual spring Street Fair.

  • Art and All That Jazz - The finale to the Student Friends' inaugural year brought together over 160 members and guests for an evening of jazz entertainment and refreshments donated by local restaurants.
