Qur'anic Prayer Board
Origin: African, Nigeria
Date: 20th Century
Medium: Ink on paper, leather and wood Ackland Fund
NA036
Beautifully inscribed Qur'anic
verses like those affixed here are symbolic and constant reminders
of the word of Allah. Devotees strive to memorize extended passages
from the Qur'an and may employ portable prayer boards like this
as visual aids. Muslims' reverence for the language and text
of the Qur'an has meant that only the unchanged (and unchangeable)
canonical Arabic version is considered the word of God, hence
its use here. There is no ritually acceptable version in another
language.
