The Arts Common

Porthole Alley View Looking South
ACKLAND ART MUSEUM
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Polshek Partnership Architects LLP

The Ackland expansion is one part of a University-wide master plan for future development of the campus. This plan calls for an Arts Common, a new campus home for the visual and performing arts, conceived as a park adjacent to the urban center of Chapel Hill. The New Ackland, adjacent to the art and music departments and situated on the border of the campus and the town of Chapel Hill will serve as the gateway to this revitalized corner of the campus.

With the potential to become as beautiful and memorable as Polk and McCorkle Places, the Arts Common will be a perfect location for picnics and seminars, poetry readings and music, outdoor sculpture, and countless other expressions of the university's intellectual and creative character.
