Window to the Humanities Gallery
The Ackland's Window to the Humanities gallery features exhibitions that are collaborative projects by UNC-CH professors, students and Ackland staff members. These small installations, typically comprised of 8 to 10 works of art from the Ackland's permanent collection, are designed to support specific undergraduate courses taught at the university. Faculty and students may advise the Ackland staff in selecting and arranging the works of art in the gallery to create an environment that encourages discussion and inquiry for the students in the course. In its prominent location immediately to visitors' left as they enter the Museum, these exhibitions will demonstrate, to audiences both within and outside the university, what goes on in teaching and research at UNC-CH. For this reason the space has been named the Window to the Humanities gallery. Not only are these exhibitions of use to the classes that co-sponsor them, but also to other university classes, community groups and K-12 students from across central North Carolina who come to the Ackland for lessons inspired by academics at UNC-CH.
Spanish Perspectives labels
Students in several Spanish composition courses at UNC-CH have submitted class essays they wrote about works of art in the Ackland for use as supplementary wall labels. The Ackland posts these labels written from individual students' points of view -- Perspectives labels -- to both demonstrate to Museum visitors the accomplishments of university undergraduates and to provide interpretive text accessible to Spanish-speaking members of the Ackland's viewing audience.
Volunteer at the Ackland
Ackland volunteer gallery teachers (docents) assist in fulfilling the educational mission of the
Museum and of its Education Department. Volunteers are selected on the basis of an interview
with staff every two years and are asked to make a two-year commitment to the program.
