Rules for Museum Visitors

So that we may provide an ideal environment for preserving and viewing art,
Visitors may bring into the Museum:
  • Books
  • Pencils
  • Strollers for infants
Visitors may not bring into the Museum:
  • Back packs
  • Food or Drink
  • Briefcases and suitcases
  • Large packages
  • Umbrellas, camera tripods, or anything similar in size and shape
  • Flash cameras
A coat room is available to the left as you enter the Ackland; please store back packs, umbrellas, etc. in this room while you are visiting the Museum.

With special permission from the Museum's assistant director and/or the security officer at the information desk, visitors may bring into the Museum:

  • Cameras, still and video
  • Art supplies for copying works of art

To photograph or copy works of art that belong to the Ackland Art Museum, you must first request permission from the Security Officer at the Museum's Information Desk. Visitors may not photograph works that are on loan to the Museum, or works created after 1978, due to current artist copyright laws.

Visitors may not:

  • smoke, eat or drink in the galleries
  • touch works of art
  • lean on pedestals or display cases
  • leave notebooks or other objects on pedestals or display cases
  • point pencils at works of art
  • put hands or fingers very close to works of art
