How can I help plan a single gallery lesson for my students?
Because every class is different, so is every gallery lesson. To make each one meaningful, we develop it from the information you provide about your class in an initial phone conversation. We always try to incorporate content and activities that meet the needs, interests and abilities of your students.
Ackland gallery lessons include activities designed to maximize student participation, using gallery teachers as facilitators rather than lecturers. A variety of teaching strategies, including writing, drawing, movement and discussion activities, can enrich your students' museum experience, while helping them develop specific skills or their understanding of a concept or subject matter. Click here for examples of gallery activities that have been successfully expanded and tailored for different grade levels to complement language arts, social studies, and science curricula.
Some activities are designed primarily for whole-group discussion; others are meant to be done in partnerships or small groups, followed by an opportunity to share discoveries and observations with the whole group (10-15 students). While these activities were originally developed for use in the galleries with original works of art, some may be transferable for use with a reproduction in the classroom.
