Programs for School-Aged Children at the Ackland Art Museum

We are happy to host school visitors Wednesday - Friday, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. We can accommodate a maximum of 60 students and provide one gallery teacher for every 12 to 15 students. (Some specialized topics may be limited to groups of 30, due to the size and layout of the galleries.) While all school tours are free of charge, donations are gratefully accepted and help us continue providing gallery lessons and programs for students and teachers.

Ackland programs are designed to be multi-sensory whenever possible, and gallery teachers are trained to adapt presentations to meet the needs of all students, including those with disabilities. We plan our lessons based on the information we receive about students' interests and abilities in our initial phone consultation with you. An FM assistive listening system is available for visitors with hearing impairments.

We urge you to consider extending the learning experience by using our pre- and post-visit classroom resources. If you are able to plan a series of three or more visits, we can arrange for an outreach visit to your classroom. Multiple-visit programs can be created with your collaboration and will result in a richer experience for your students.

The Ackland Art Museum would like to thank the supporters of its school and teacher programs, including: Institute of Museum and Library Services, The Grable Foundation, the state of North Carolina, and the many generous individuals who make special contributions to the Ackland's education funds.
