This carving of Vishnu in his cosmic sleep is nearly completed. Soon it will leave the sculptors' workshop and be ritually installed in a temple. The last steps are when the priests invoke the breath of life in the figure-- and the sculptor opens the god's eyes with a special needle. From that moment, the community no longer sees a stone carving, but a god with whom they can experience an exchange of spiritual energy.
