Self-Guided Community Group Visits

We welcome you to the Ackland for your self-guided group tour. We hope that you will return to the Museum with this or other groups. The information below will be helpful in planning future group excursions to the Ackland.

Museum educators are available to meet or talk with you to plan a valuable experience for you and your group. There are a number of easy-to-use activities that you can employ in all or selected galleries. We will happy to help you select the activity or activities that best suits your class; call the telephone numbers listed below for more information.

Because of limited space in the Ackland's galleries and the high number of scheduled tours for K-12 and university students, we ask that you schedule visits for any groups of five or more. Call one of the numbers listed at the bottom of this page to schedule your visit with a museum educator. When you call, please provide the following information:

  1. The number of participants/students in your entire group;
  2. The preferred day and time you wish to visit.
A museum educator will contact you to confirm your visit, or to reschedule another day or time, if your preferred day and time is unavailable.

Please arrange to have one adult chaperone for every 7 group members under the age of 18. This will help insure a positive experience for the children in your group and for other museum visitors.

Please keep the following in mind when planning your trip:

  • The number of self-guided visitors that the Ackland Art Museum can accommodate at a given time varies from day to day.
  • The number of students participating in pre-scheduled tours as well as the number of other visitors that are present in the galleries will influence what spaces in the Museum will be available to and comfortable for your group when you visit.
  • Smaller galleries - the African, ancient, Islamic, Judaic, medieval and North Carolina collections - can comfortably accommodate ten people at a time. Other larger gallery spaces - the Asian, Renaissance and Baroque, 17th & 18th century, 19th century, 20th and 21st century and temporary galleries - can accommodate up to 15 people at a time.
  • The number of people that can be accommodated in the Museum's temporary exhibitions varies. Please call the Museum's Education Department at the numbers below before you arrive to see how many people a specific exhibition can comfortably and safely hold.
  • You and your group will have a more positive experience if all group participants are familiar with Museum's rules and why they are enforced. Museum security and other staff are on hand to see that visitors abide by these rules in the galleries. Staff reserves the right to escort a visitor out of the Museum if his/her behavior is thought to put other visitors or works of art at risk.

If you choose to create a worksheet or scavenger hunt for your group, please bring pencils, and alert the Museum staff so that we can have writing boards available to use in the galleries.
