Over the past twenty-five years, photographer Wendy Ewald has become well-known
for her collaborative work with children around the world. Her
work has been published and exhibited widely, including in the
1998 Whitney Biennial.
In 1997 and 1998, the Ackland Art Museum commissioned Ewald
to conduct a series of photography workshops in five different
religious communities in central North Carolina. She collaborated
with children ages eight to thirteen, helping them capture
images of their traditions and heritage on film. Visions
of Faith presents the results of that work. In coordinating
this initiative, the Ackland set out to document traditions
of the world religions represented in the Museum's permanent
collection as they are practiced locally.
Visions of Faith is part of the Ackland's Five
Faiths Project. Using original works of art from the Museum's
collection, the Five Faiths Project explores the beliefs
and practices of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and
Judaism with local and national audiences. The Five Faiths
Project is founded on the conviction that centering conversations
about faith traditions on works of art originally used in
worship promotes objective and thoughtful consideration of
those traditions.
