| As the center for art and fashion, Paris is naturally the home for many grand shows and exhibitions and has been for centuries. Parisians have consistently found joy in theatre entertainment. While the theatre is not the immediate stereotypical images of Paris, it is a central part of the city, and without it, Paris would not be the same. It was through the Exposition Universalle of 1889 that Gustave Eiffel brought the city what would become its beloved symbol, the Eiffel Tower. Mercier wrote during the last quarter of the eighteenth century in Panorama of Paris that owning boxes at the theatre was a sign of affluence. Daumier’s At the Salon satirizes how much Parisians love a spectacle, while Lepere’s Exposition of 1889 shows the magnificence of this aspect of Parisian culture. |
