SCULPTURE
ON THE ARC DE TRIOMPHE
Baldus photographed the Arc de Triomphe while working for the Mission Héliographique, a government sponsored photographic survey of historical monuments in France. Art historian Shelley Rice writes of this project, "The mission's function was, essentially, conservative. the numerous negatives produced under its auspices were designed to preserve France's ancient architectural heritage--a heritage that was being threatened not only by industrialization but also by restoration."
