ELDORADO:
ARISTIDE BRUANT IN HIS CABARET
Bruant’s own cabaret was the Mirliton in Montmartre, but in 1892 he performed for a limited time at the Ambassadeurs, a major café-concert on the Champs-Elysées. For these per- formances he re-created the interior of the Mirliton on the stage of the Ambassadeurs, and they were publicised as “Aristide Bruant in his cabaret” even though the Ambas- sadeurs was not his cabaret. Although there
is no record of Bruant’s performing at the Eldorado, this poster was probably
made for a similar limited engagement by the singer. Toulouse-Lautrec had
made a poster virtually identical to this one for the Ambassadeurs, except
that Bruant is facing the other way.
