LEAVING
THE EXPOSITION OF 1889
The British invented the international exhibition in 1851, but the French made it their own. Five of these world's fairs were held in Paris during the nineteenth century: in 1855, 1867, 1878, 1889 and 1900. The 1889 Exposition universelle was especially notable for its constructions in iron and glass: the giant Galerie des machines visible at the left in this print, and the still more famous Eiffel Tower that can just be seen in the distance.
