CHARLES-MELCHIOR
DESCOURTIS, French, 1753-1820; Returning home, the two children lose their way in the forest, but are found by their dog Fidele ("Faithful") and the slave Domingue. A major theme of the novel is the natural affinity between virtuous human beings despite the distinctions of society. The mothers of Paul and Virginie come from different social backgrounds but raise their children together. The two slaves attached to this household, Dominingue and his wife, appear to be joined to it by affection rather than by slavery. Yet though social hierarchy is condemned, there is no suggestion that it can be changed.
