The Encyclopédie is a notable and exemplary product of the French Enlightenment.  Published under the direction of Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d’Alembert, the 17 volumes of text contain nearly 72,000 entries written by at least 140 contributors, including some of the most prominent thinkers of the time, François Marie Arouet de Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Jean-François Marmontel.

The Encyclopédie was intended from the first to be an illustrated work but the twelve volumes of plates did not begin to appear until 1762. Over 3000 plates are grouped according to themes which are organized alphabetically.  Each group of plates is preceded by printed text, a legend identifying plates in te group and the figures marked within each plate.

This plate focuses on the art of sculpture in marble, one of the many topics addressed in this monumental work.
