View and Plan of the Vauxhall
at the Foire Saint-Germain

etching and engraving, 1772
The William A. Whitaker Foundation Art Fund, 2000.10.2

This print may document an actual location for the pleasures and pastimes of French society, providing a parallel to Vauxhall Gardens in England.  On the other hand, it could merely be an illustration of a speculative project by the architect Lenoir, le Romain. It remains unclear whether or not a French Vauxhall was ever built.

The top portion provides an interior view of an eighteenth-century ‘spectacle’ depicted in an extravagant Rococo style.  The image is supplemented with the architectural floor plans of this location in the bottom portion of the print. The Rococo style combines with the rationality of the floor plan to represent the existence of varying discourses in the eighteenth-century. Like the architectural prints of Piranesi, the image incorporates a legend to help the viewer identify the various parts of the drawing.
