GIOVANNI BATTISTA PIRANESI
Italian, 1720 – 1778
View of the Temple of the Sibyl in Tivoli,
from the Vedute of Roma
etching, 1761
Gift of Charles Andrew Kistler
and Mary K. Stahl, 60.16.11

This etching showcases Piranesi’s combination of the imaginative and the informative.  He documents the ruins of classical antiquity, emphasizing organic forms and natural decay.  Even Piranesi’s figures seem like metamorphosing organic forms tied to the landscape, as they writhe about in the foreground and through the holes in the ruins.

Piranesi’s use of text in the form of a topographical legend is often a demonstration of his archaeological desire and intent to document the landscape. In this print, the text in the lower margin discusses the temple of the sibyl and also identifies a secondary building, the temple marked in the print by the number two.
