Collecting Photography: A Community Dialogue
August 24 - September 28, 2003
Defining Moments: Two Centuries of Photography will provide the backdrop for a mini-exhibition of ten photographs that are potential Museum acquisitions. This is the second in a series of “Collecting” exhibitions, following on the success of last year’s inaugural Collecting Contemporary Art. Both color and black and white images, ranging in date from the nineteenth century to the present will be selected with an eye towards diversity of style and subject matter. American and Asian photographers whose works complement and expand the Museum's collection will be considered. During the course of Collecting Photography: A Community Dialogue, visitors will have an opportunity to share their thoughts on which works the Ackland should purchase within the context of the larger group of photographs on view. Museum staff will select the photographs with strong consideration given to visitors' comments. A gallery talk introducing the works as well as a roundtable discussion on collecting photography will provide an understanding of the individual works of art as well as the Museum's process of purchasing art. The selection of photographs will be formally announced at a special members reception on September 25, 2003. Joining now will ensure your place at this exciting event – call Andrea Hirth at (919) 843-3676 for membership information.
