I am a Taiwanese-born Canadian currently living in the United States—a cultural hybrid. In my work, I explore this phenomenon by reviewing and revising Eastern and Western cultural stereotypes according to my understanding of both worlds. Through this self-examination, I seek to expose the gap between lived experience and pre-existing misconceptions. The result is a hybridized art that evokes the interchangeability and dislocation that I have experienced from my cross-cultural vantage point.

Technique plays an important role in both my miniatures and paper cutouts. By juxtaposing traditional Chinese craft with Western popular imagery, I attempt to question cultural clichés. My meticulously crafted food miniatures fuse signature American and Chinese dishes, (such as hot dogs and Chinese dumplings), suggesting the possibility of replacing our dated impressions with a new presentation. In my paper cutouts, American pop cultural iconography collides with traditional Chinese folk art, resulting in work that reflects the new grammar of our increasingly globalized world. In both bodies of work, through the integration of Chinese and American imagery, viewers are asked to re-examine the value of traditional art as well as to discover a new merging of American and Chinese cultures.

我是於台灣出生的加拿大人 目前居住於美國 我稱自己為 文化上的混合體 在我的作品中 我藉由自身對東西兩個世界的了解 加以不斷的檢閱及修正東西方文化認知上的偏差 探索著文化混合的現象 透過自我審視 我試圖揭開預設的錯誤觀念與真實世界間的差距 其成果便稱為能喚起我自橫跨文化的優勢點中 親身體驗到的文化互換性與脫離性的 「東西方混合體藝術」

技巧在我的微型食物和剪紙中皆扮演了重要的角色 藉由中國傳統的技藝與西方通俗文化形象的並置 我試圖質疑文化上的陳腐思想 我精心製作的微型食物中 融合了美國的招牌熱狗 和中國水餃 這提出了以新面貌取代舊印象的可能性 而在我的剪紙系列中 美國的通俗文化圖像衝擊了中國的民間藝術 鑄造出一系列能反映日趨全球化世界法則的作品 透過了中國與美國形象意念上的結合 在我展出的這兩組作品中 觀賞者將被邀請一同檢視傳統藝術的價值 並且搜尋一個中美文化的新交會處
