Pamela Singh
Pamela Singh's references to meditation relate directly to the practice of her Tantric Hindu faith. The artist's painted photographs are influenced by complex rituals and geometric symbols associated with its sacred arts. Tantra is based on a belief in the unity of life, which is often symbolized by the circle. In her Self-Portrait in Jaipur #1, the artist wears a dot circumscribed in gold pigment above her eyes. This point, called a bindu, is "visually the meditation that starts in the forehead and then goes into other spaces of consciousness and disappears." In Tantric Hinduism, the bindu is the center from which all energy emanates and to which all energy returns. Referred to as the "third eye," it is often depicted in paintings and sculptures of deities to indicate clairvoyance. In Hindu rituals, men and women make offerings to Gods and Goddesses, receiving their blessings in the form of a red dot of vermilion powder placed above the eyes by the priest.
