Kimsooja
The importance of meditation is central to Kimsooja’s work, which evokes parallels with Buddhist philosophy. In her video projection, A Laundry Woman, the artist invites the viewer to experience her meditations along the Yamuna River in India. Kimsooja offers her own figure -- seen from the back and silhouetted against glowing blue waters -- as a vehicle for others to contemplate the cycles of life and the connections between people and nature. The relationship between Kimsooja’s body and the river suggests not only harmony between humans and the natural world but the strength and solace garnered from establishing this bond. Images of the Buddha are used to inspire contemplation. Similarly, Kimsooja's video offers viewers an opportunity for reflection.
