Panel Discussion - A Place for Meaning: Art, Faith, and Museum Culture

The discussion will focus on the limits and potentials of works of art as tools for teaching and learning about world religions. David Carr, School of Information and Library Science, will facilitate the panel discussion. Time will be allowed for questions from the audience.

Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, and Islam, the faiths represented in Five Artists * Five Faiths trace their history through centuries of human experience and rich cultural heritage. Please join us for a series of music, dance, and narrative performances by University and area performers that illuminate the artistic expressions of spirituality in the exhibition.
Performances will take place in the Ackland galleries and will last approximately one hour. A reception, included in the ticket price, will follow the final performance. Series tickets $25; $15 for students. Individual performances $8; $5 for students. Complimentary admission for Ackland Art Museum members. Space is limited and advance registration required. Songs from Islam
Thursday, September 23 at 7:30 p.m.
Experience the Diwan of Shaykh Muhammad Ibn al-Habib, the great Qur'anic scholar and composer, in this concert of choral music accompanied by handheld drum. An ensemble led by Mustapha Shoukee will perform and interpret four songs from this world-renowned devotional masterpiece.

Hindu Dance
Thursday, October 28 at 7:30 p.m.
Witness the talented dancers of Sangam, the University's South Asian Awareness Organization, in a stirring performance specially choreographed for the Ackland galleries in conjunction with this exhibition.

Jewish and Buddhist Narratives
Thursday, November 18 at 7:30 p.m.
Join masterful storyteller Louise Omoto Kessel and fellow members of the World Religions Storytelling Project as they share tales from the Jewish and Buddhist traditions. (This program is suitable for children ages 10 and above.)

Christian Choral Music
Thursday, December 9 at 7:30 p.m.
Reflect on this festive season as members of the University Music Department share a selection of carols and spirituals. You are invited to join us for a reception immediately following this performance.
