Helène Aylon
Sacred text is central to the work of Helène Aylon. Her installation
provides an alternative reading of the Torah. The Torah, the sacred text
of Judaism, is composed of The Five Books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus,
Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Aylon’s installation, which
includes 59 volumes and two videos, is dramatically composed within an
ark-shaped space that invites viewers to become immersed in the work.
The Liberation of G-d documents the artist’s critical reading of The
Five Books of Moses in which she placed a sheet of vellum over each page
and highlighted between words where a female presence is omitted and
over words that describe cruelty to animals and militarism. Aylon’s art
is a type of Midrash, the scholarly analysis of and commentary on
scriptures that was traditionally open only to Jewish men.
