The Torah, the sacred text of Judaism, is composed of The Five Books of Moses: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Aylon’s installation, which includes 59 volumes and two videos, is dramatically composed within an ark-shaped space that invites viewers to become immersed in the work. The Liberation of G-d documents the artist’s critical reading of The Five Books of Moses in which she placed a sheet of vellum over each page and highlighted between words where a female presence is omitted and over words that describe cruelty to animals and militarism. Aylon’s art is a type of Midrash, the scholarly analysis of and commentary on scriptures that was traditionally open only to Jewish men.
