Polychrome plastic sculpture with CD
Anonymous Gift, 2001.25
Motivated by a desire to challenge traditionally defined distinctions between “high art” and kitsch, Takashi Murakami draws his subject matter from everyday life. Trained in both traditional Japanese painting techniques and Western practices, Murakami embraces Japanese popular culture by adopting imagery from Japanese cartoons, comic books, advertising and fashion. His untitled sculpture is accompanied by an electronic music CD that combines environmental sounds interspersed with short segments of classical Japanese music.
