Julie Moos uses photography to examine the complexities of human relationships. Domestic is the third chapter in a series of double portraits of residents from the artist’s community in Birmingham, Alabama. Although there appears to be no clear relationship between the sitters in this series, Moos has paired homeowners with their employees. The isolation and unfamiliarity between the sitters suggested by the photograph is deliberately deceiving, for in most cases the housekeepers have lived and worked with the homeowner’s families for several decades.
