Red Grooms is a sculptor, painter and performance artist well known for his “sculpto-pictoramas,” which are colorful, expressive three-dimensional environments. These theatrical and humorous works often reflect contemporary American urban life. This drawing of Mimi, the artist’s wife and artistic collaborator, is conceived like one of Grooms’ sculptures. The artist creates a sense of volume through the frontal composition and close-up perspective of the figure that almost fills the frame. With an explosion of colors, Grooms generates a dynamic atmosphere that contrasts with Mimi’s classical sculpture-like head.
