Window to the Humanities
Family in Focus: Documentary Photographs of the Neugents by David Spear
October 29, 2003 - January 11, 2004
Behind this exhibition are eight months of hard work and three talented
Carolina students in the Johnston, Carolina and Pogue Scholars programs
at UNC-Chapel Hill. The goal for the exhibition is to present works
by a
current photographer with significant work in black and white. The
students chose David Spear based on his photographic technique and
the
amazing insight his work lends to documenting the rural North Carolina
lifestyle.
In the words of the students themselves:
"The David Spear photos
are simple but complex; the complexity lies not in the subject but
in Spear's composition, technique, lighting, and exposure."
"The more you look at the David Spear photos, the more you
wonder about
these people, their lifestyle, and their relationships to each other
[and the land]."
