Glossary

Accession Number
The unique identifying number assigned to a work when it is accessioned or added to the museum collection. The parts of the number describe when the work was acquired and whether it was acquired individually or as part of a larger group. For example, a work with the accession number 2004.1 was acquired in the year 2004, as the first acquisition of the year and is a single work, whereas 2004.2.3 was acquired in 2004 as part of the second acquisition of the year and was one of at least three works acquired from the same source.

Category
One of ten classifications assigned by our curatorial staff to types of works in the collection. These classifications are based upon the medium and format of the work.

Credit Line
This field provides information regarding the source of funds used to purchase a work or a donor-specified dedication.

Culture
This term is used to describe the nationality or culture of the artist.

Medium
A non-standard string of words or phrases describing the materials from which a work is made.

Wild Cards
On the Simple Search, a wildcard (a special symbol that stands for one or more characters) has been placed at the end of the search terms. On the Advanced Search, a wildcard has been placed at the beginning and end of all search terms, except for the Accession Number.

Wildcards are useful when only part of the search term is known. For example, entering the title 'madonna' on the Simple Search will return all works of art that begin with the title 'Madonna' and on the Advanced Search will return works of art that have the word 'Madonna' anywhere in the title.
