There is always something new to see at the Ackland.

With over half the Museum's gallery space dedicated to special and traveling exhibitions, the Ackland organizes more than a dozen exhibitions a year. Special exhibitions present a wide stylistic range, from contemporary American photography to European master paintings, video installations to Early Modern portraits. University scholars and guest curators enrich the Ackland exhibition schedule with cutting-edge research and innovative approaches to works of art. A walk through the Ackland can be an introduction to Peter Paul Rubens, Eugene Delacroix, and Andy Warhol—all in the same day.

Traveling Exhibition News!

At the Heart of Progress: Coal, Iron, and Steam since 1750 - Industrial Imagery from the John P. Eckblad Collection opened at the the Bowes Museum -- in the town of Barnard Castle, Teesdale, County Durham, England -- on 17 September 2011. Drawn from one of the most extensive private holdings of prints and posters associated with industry and labor, that of Dr. John P. Eckblad of Chapel Hill, At the Heart of Progress examines the trinity of coal, iron, and steam, whose enormous benefits to industrial civilization are counterbalanced by equally enormous tolls. The exhibition will be on view at the Bowes Museum through 15 January 2012.
