Volunteer Docent Program

The Ackland Art Museum Docents are a dedicated group of volunteers who offer their time, talents, and expertise to support the Museum's education programs for K-12 teachers and students and for community members and organizations. Each year, these programs serve over 6,000 people a year. The majority of these audiences are elementary and middle-school-aged children, but they also include high-school students and adults.

Docents receive training in the Ackland's collections and special exhibitions, in the basics of art history and of child development, and they learn a variety of techniques in interactive teaching. Ackland educators request that Docents be willing to teach once a week after their training concludes.

Currently the Ackland is not seeking new docent applications. To find out more about the program and when we start accepting applications again, contact Carolyn Allmendinger, Director of Academic Programs, at: carolyn.allmendinger@unc.edu or 919.962.3343.
